Listed below are the many agencies and programs that will be served on our 2008 Great Day of Service

AIDS Alliance – Community effort to prevent and combat the spread of HIV/AIDS through education and awareness; provides compassionate response to the needs of HIV infected persons, those living with AIDS, their loved ones and caregivers.  www.aidsalliance.us

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) – Provides advocacy for abused and neglected children whose situations require court intervention.  www.halldawsoncasa.org

Eagle Ranch – Provides a Christ-centered home for children in need.  www.EagleRanch.org

Gainesville Action Ministries -- Works to prevent homelessness through programs of in-kind relief and emergency financial assistance to prevent utility disconnection or eviction.

Gainesville – Hall Senior Center -- Fellowship, activities and a hot noon meal for senior adults.  www.gainesville.org  (Go to City Departments/Community Service Center/Senior Center)

Good News at Noon – Feeds the hungry and shelters homeless men.

Health Access Initiative – Improves access to health care for low income, uninsured adults living in Hall County.  www.healthaccessinitiative.com

My Sister’s Place – A shelter that provides a safe haven and a fresh start for displaced women and their children.  www.My-Sisters-Place.com

Our Neighbor – Offers opportunities for young adults with physical disabilities to have a more meaningful life through independence.     www.ourneighbor.org.

Boys and Girls Clubs – Inspires and enables young people, especially those who need it most, to reach their full potential as caring and responsible citizens. www.boysgirlsclubs.com

Community Food Pantry – Provides emergency food supply for persons in need.

Elachee Nature Center – Provides environmental education and natural resource protection.   www.elachee.org

Gainesville Care Center -- Provides crisis pregnancy and STD health resources.  www.gainesvillecare.org

Gateway Domestic Violence Center -- Provides shelter and supportive services for victims of domestic violence and their children.

Guest House – Day health center that provides supportive care to older adults who have physical or cognitive limitations which put them at risk for nursing home placement.  www.theguesthouse.org

Hospice – End of life care to terminally ill patients in their homes and support for the patient’s loved ones.  www.nghs.com/cancer/hospice

NE Georgia Speech Center – Provides diagnostic evaluations and therapy for communicatively impaired individuals.

Cooley Drive “Take Flight” -- Works to break the cycle of hopelessness and despair for the people of the Cooley Drive community and replace it with hopefulness.

Meals on Wheels – Contributes to the overall well-being of seniors by providing a regular nutritious meal and contact with a caring volunteer.  www.gainesville.org  (Go to City Departments/Community Service Center/Meals on Wheels)

Baker-Glover Mobile Home Park ( Torch Ministries) -- Preaches the gospel of Jesus Christ and develops community leaders within this mobile home community.

Head Start Program -- Promotes school readiness and provides a comprehensive child development program for preschool children whose family income is below poverty level. 

Restoration and Preservation Mission (Wahoo Cemetery) -- Works to preserve abandoned or neglected cemeteries. 

Sunshine Seniors – Provides quarterly lunch meetings, education and fun activities to encourage good health among older adults.

Camp Glisson – A camp and retreat as a ministry of the North Georgia Conference, UMC. www.campglisson.org

Pleasant Hill UMC -- This was the first church in Hall  County for free blacks, dating to the late 1800’s.  Located in the Gillsville area.

Caribbean Christian Center for the Deaf -- Keith and April Cox serve three residential schools in Jamaica bringing the gospel of Jesus, basic education and vocational training. “Deaf ears, but hearing hearts": Psalms 118:23.

Orphanage Emmanuel -- A Christian orphanage, the second largest in Honduras, being served by church members Reed and Kim Skinner. “Though my Father and Mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me.” Psalms 27:10.

Romania -- Dave and Jen Cox have been in the ministry in Bucharest, Romania since 1996 and have started two churches .

Venezuela – Jon and Jeannie Herrin

Serbia – GFUMC is a partner with two churches in Padina and Kovacica, Serbia – Rev. Jano and Lijana Sjanta

West African Theological Seminary(WATS) – GFUMC has entered into a “Gateway Partnership” with Nigeria’s largest nondenominational seminary that serves one of the fastest growing segments of the Christian Church.  www.watsonline.org

Other service opportunities

In His Wakes – An organization that introduces people to the life-changing power of Jesus Christ using the avenue of water sports.  www.inhiswakes.com  (This project proposed by the friends of Evan King)

Regional Youth Detention Center – Provides temporary secure care and supervision to youths who are charged with crimes or who have been found guilty of crimes and are awaiting disposition of their cases in juvenile court.  www.djj.state.ga.us
